A large part of the FusionInventory team has made the move at FrOSCAmp in Zurich, Switzerland, thanks to Mathieu Simon who organized our venue and is a wonderful local support. We could present the project new features, now that the agent version 2.1 and the plugin for GLPI version 2.2.2 have been released. The conference and the booth were places to start lots of discussions. For the team, time to meet for the first time in real life the new contributors. The roadmap for the next version of the agent has been fixed : the efforts on version 2.2 will be focused on performance and security improvements.

First talk in France

A large part of the FusionInventory team was present at Libre Software Meeting 2010 in Bordeaux this week. We had a talk just after the talk of GLPI project, and could present to a large audience, for the first time in France, the result of all the work that has been done in the last months.

We now provide an unique agent running on multiple OSes like Windows, MacOS X, Linux, *BSD, HP-UX. This agent is modular and already can perform serveral tasks like local inventory of computers, network inventory with SNMP, network discovery, remote wake up of computers, remote wake up of the agent, deployment of packages using OCSNG methods. And as the FusionInventory agent is modular, everybody can add his own task. On the server side, a generic library is also on the way to communicate with the agents. This library will be the core of an integration into GLPI.

Hot new stuff

The first public talk in France was the occasion of releasing new stuff. A Release Canditate of the agent was released some days ago, it was not enough. We made the new logo of the project official. Big up to Mamadi Kaba from stampdc.com who created it and worked amazingly fast. The first FusionInventory T-shirts were ready too, and proudly weared by the members of the team and some lucky contributors. We plan to release soon a second edition of this T-shirts, stay tuned !

Meetings and discussions

This was an extremely rich week of meetings and discussions for everyone. We had all a lot of pleasure to meet our users, our future users, contributors, projects with same engagement like the guys of monitoring-fr.org, Shinken and GLPI project. And we’re glad we heard people mentionning our project during their talks about GLPI, Mondo Rescue, Pulse2, GOsa², OPSI, WPKG … It gives new perspectives for the future of deployment, backup, disaster recovery and monitoring tasks in FusionInventory.

What’s next ?

Now everyone is back to work, and there is a lot to do …

We plan to participate to other meetings during this year. See you in Zurich with GLPI at Froscamp (september), in Lyon at JDLL (october), in Sofia Antipolis at JM2L (november) …

There was a talk about Fusioninventory at Linux Open Administration Days (LOADAYS) in Antwerpen (Belgium), on 11/04/2020. Fabrice explained origins of the project, what it’s currently possible to do with the agent and the associated tools, how to get the software, and why you should use the fusioninventory agent. You can find here the slides of the talk. The room was full and we had a lot of interesting questions from the audience. Apart from this, Loadays was awesome, with a lot of presentations and side talks about configuration management databases, massive deployment. A great event for system administrators and devops!

The FusionInventory project

During the FOSDEM meeting, a group of people decided to join their force to create a new independent project called FusionInventory. FusionInventory project aims to provide a better integration between the different asset management projects including OCS Inventory, GLPI and GOSA.

Components

  • FusionInventory Agent (former OCS Inventory UNIX agent). We want it to be the sole agent installed on the machines. Because of that we improved its internal architecture to be more modular and we will port it to Windows.
  • FusionInventory For GLPI (former GLPI Tracker plugin ). Today’s Tracker is a powerful SNMP/Network discovery extension for GLPI. This plugin will be the interface between the agent and GLPI.

Roadmap

  • Feb 2010: Alpha release of the agent including SNMP, WakeOnLan
  • Mar 2010: Beta release of the agent including P2P OCS Deployment
  • Apr 2010: 2.1 release, Windows support
  • May 2010: GOsa² integration including Linux and Windows OS deployment (FAI and OPSI) and LTSP support

Others

  • The current agent already supports VirtualMachines detection. We wish to integrate it with GLPI & OCS quickly.

About OCS. We believe in FreeSoftware, standard and interoperability. OCS Inventory is a major software for our users and it’s critical to keep the compatibility with it. That’s why we use OCS network protocol and XML format. We want to continue to work with OCS Team to keep the compatibility as good as possible. This IS a major point for us.

Everybody is welcome in this project. Even more if you love cooperation between projects and are open-minded :) . We look for:

  • Windows packager of the agent
  • Perl & PHP programmers
  • Beta testers
  • Friendly people on IRC
  • YOURSELF!

Who we are
- Myself, former OCS Inventory core Team Member and OCS Inventory UNIX Agent maintainer
- Benoit Mortier, GOsa² core Team Member, FAI and OPSI contributor
- David Durieux, “FusionInventory For GLPI” core member, “FusionInventory Agent” contributor, GLPI conributor
- And more…
